Unofficial summary · Sources checked
A China student visa is applied for online through the official portal, then reviewed by the mission handling the case. The Chinese Embassy in the United States describes the process as three main steps: sign up and log in, fill the form and upload materials, then go through online review and submit your passport (Embassy of the PRC in the United States — Guidelines for China Online VISA Application, 22 September 2025, overview).
Check which visa you need with the X1 or X2 visa check: you enter your study length in days and it prints the documents for that visa.

The official portal
The China Consular Services website states the official portal provides comprehensive online support for the entire Chinese visa application process. It allows applicants to start a new application or continue a saved draft, and enables status tracking and management of subsequent appointments such as interview bookings, all within the same platform (China Online VISA Application, China Consular Services website).
Chinese Embassy in the United States: the three steps
The Embassy of the PRC in the United States launched the China Online VISA Application system. Applicants within the jurisdiction of the Embassy may use the system to fill out forms, upload materials for online preliminary review, and track the status of the application (Embassy of the PRC in the United States — Guidelines for China Online VISA Application, 22 September 2025, overview).
The application consists of three main steps (Embassy of the PRC in the United States — Guidelines for China Online VISA Application, 22 September 2025, overview).
Step I. Signing up and logging into your account
Go to http://consular.mfa.gov.cn/VISA/. Click the [Sign In] button at the top-right corner. First-time users sign up with an email address. Step II. Filling out the form and uploading materials
Submit your application based on the consular jurisdiction of the Chinese Embassy and Consulates-General in the United States. Read the "Guidelines for Filling in the China Online Visa Application (COVA) Form" and "Instructions for visa applications at the Embassy/Consulate" before starting (Embassy of the PRC in the United States — Guidelines for China Online VISA Application, 22 September 2025, step II).
The form has 9 sections: Personal information, Type of visa, Work information, Education, Family information, Information on your travel, Information on previous travel, Other information, and Declaration. Fill it out in Chinese or English sequentially. After finishing all required fields marked with *, click [Next]. You may click [Save] to save progress (Embassy of the PRC in the United States — Guidelines for China Online VISA Application, 22 September 2025, step II). Saved drafts are viewed and edited under account — [Personal Center] — [My draft] (Embassy of the PRC in the United States — Guidelines for China Online VISA Application, 22 September 2025, step II).
Type of visa. Select your visa type by the purpose of your visit to China. Choose "Standard" or "Expedited" processing; expedited processing needs an extra charge, and processing time is calculated from the date of passport submission. Confirm the service type with a consular official at the Embassy/Consulate-General (Embassy of the PRC in the United States — Guidelines for China Online VISA Application, 22 September 2025, step II, section 2). Whether to issue a visa, the type, number of entries, validity, and duration of each stay will be determined by consular officials; it may differ from what you filled in (Embassy of the PRC in the United States — Guidelines for China Online VISA Application, 22 September 2025, step II, section 2).
Information on your travel. The system only accepts visa applications for entry dates within the next 90 days; applications submitted outside this period will not be processed (Embassy of the PRC in the United States — Guidelines for China Online VISA Application, 22 September 2025, step II, section 6, item 1). The entry [6.5 Person sharing the same passport with you] applies only when a traveling companion uses the same passport; if traveling with others holding different passports, select "No" (Embassy of the PRC in the United States — Guidelines for China Online VISA Application, 22 September 2025, step II, section 6, item 2).
Uploading materials. Upload required documents as per system instructions. Only image files are supported; PDF and other formats are not accepted. Documents marked with red dashed borders are mandatory (Embassy of the PRC in the United States — Guidelines for China Online VISA Application, 22 September 2025, step II, section 10, item 1). The Visa Application Statement template can be downloaded from the Embassy website, then filled in, printed, and uploaded (Embassy of the PRC in the United States — Guidelines for China Online VISA Application, 22 September 2025, step II, section 10, item 2). First-time applicants who were formerly Chinese citizens, or whose either parent is or was a Chinese citizen, upload materials based on individual circumstances (Embassy of the PRC in the United States — Guidelines for China Online VISA Application, 22 September 2025, step II, section 10, item 3). Foreigners in the United States upload their visa, permanent residence permit, or other materials proving legal residence (Embassy of the PRC in the United States — Guidelines for China Online VISA Application, 22 September 2025, step II, section 10, item 4). Other circumstances requiring explanation, or materials requested during preliminary review, are uploaded under [Anything else you want to declare] (Embassy of the PRC in the United States — Guidelines for China Online VISA Application, 22 September 2025, step II, section 10, item 5).
Confirm the information. After uploading, click [Next] to confirm. Review the submitted information and materials; to change, click [Modify]. Once confirmed, click [Submit the application form]. Submitted forms cannot be modified until consular officials' review (Embassy of the PRC in the United States — Guidelines for China Online VISA Application, 22 September 2025, step II, section 11).
Step III. Online review and submitting your passport
After submission, the application enters online preliminary review by Embassy staff. Track progress via [Track the status of my application] on the homepage (Embassy of the PRC in the United States — Guidelines for China Online VISA Application, 22 September 2025, step III). If the application does not meet requirements or needs more materials, staff reject it and the status becomes [Rejected and to be modified]; modify and supplement per the Embassy or Consulate's feedback (Embassy of the PRC in the United States — Guidelines for China Online VISA Application, 22 September 2025, step III).
After preliminary review is approved, status displays "Passport to be submitted." The applicant or agent visits the Embassy Visa office to submit the passport, a printed copy of the application information page with barcode, and certain original documents required on-site (Embassy of the PRC in the United States — Guidelines for China Online VISA Application, 22 September 2025, step III).
Online review approval does not guarantee visa issuance. Consular officers may require an in-person interview or additional documentation. Processing times may vary by individual circumstances, and some applications may require longer processing time (Embassy of the PRC in the United States — Guidelines for China Online VISA Application, 22 September 2025, step III).
