Passport validity for a China scholarship and visa application

Unofficial summary · Sources checked

Passport validity follows two separate rules, one for the scholarship application and one for the visa. For the Chinese Government Scholarship, if your passport is valid for less than 12 months counted from your expected study start date, renew it and use the renewed passport to apply (Application Guide for Chinese Government Scholarship, section VI, item 2). At the visa stage, the UK and US missions ask for a passport with at least six months of remaining validity.

Check what your file needs with our document checklist tool; for a Chinese Government Scholarship applicant it prints the section VI items that apply to your answers, each with its item number.

Scholarship application stage

The Application Guide for Chinese Government Scholarship (China Scholarship Council, Campus China) sets the passport rule at section VI, item 2:

  • Submit a clear scanned copy of the information page of your ordinary passport.
  • If the validity period of your currently held passport is less than 12 months, calculated from the expected start date of study, renew the passport and use it to complete the scholarship application.
  • An applicant who fails to apply for a passport due to objective reasons may submit valid documentation or documentary evidence that carries the full English name, gender, nationality and date of birth of the applicant, upon the approval of the application receiving agency.

The guide measures the 12-month test from the expected start date of study, not from the application date.

Visa application stage

The visa-stage rule is set by the mission handling your application, not by a single national instruction.

The China Consular Services Visa Application Instructions state that requirements are "as required by the Chinese Embassy or Consulate-General in your locality" and refer the applicant to the Guidance on Visa Application section of the China Online Visa Application System (consular.mfa.gov.cn/VISA/) or to the website of the local Chinese Embassy or Consulate-General.

The Embassy of the PRC in the United Kingdom (Part Two: How to Apply for a Visa for China, I. Basic Documents, item 1) requires the original passport with at least six months of remaining validity and blank visa pages, plus a photocopy of the bio data page.

The Embassy of the PRC in the United States (Requirements and Procedures for Chinese Visa Application, Updated September 2025) sets two points: - Documents to be uploaded online, item 1: passport bio-page and blank visa page; passport remaining validity must be more than 6 months with at least 2 blank visa pages. - Documents to be submitted on-site as originals, item 1: passport original used for the visa application.

The UK mission asks for at least six months of remaining validity; the US mission asks for more than 6 months of remaining validity and at least 2 blank visa pages. Check the page of the mission that will handle your application.

Questions people ask

Does the scholarship guide give an alternative if I cannot get a passport?

Yes. The Application Guide for Chinese Government Scholarship, section VI, item 2, states that an applicant who fails to apply for a passport due to objective reasons may submit valid documentation or documentary evidence carrying the full English name, gender, nationality and date of birth, upon the approval of the application receiving agency.

Is six months' passport validity enough for the scholarship application?

The scholarship rule is separate from the visa rule. Section VI, item 2 of the Application Guide measures passport validity from the expected start date of study and requires renewal if less than 12 months remain; it does not use the six-month test. The six-month (or more-than-six-month) rule applies at the visa stage under the mission handling your case.
