Scholarships in China for undergraduates

Two national scholarship frameworks name bachelor's study. The Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS) names undergraduates in its Bilateral Program and in three of its designated programmes (EU, PIF and WMO). The International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship 2025 has its own Bachelor's Degree category.

Chinese Government Scholarship programmes

The Bilateral Program is open to undergraduates (section I(I)); an applicant files with the dispatching department of their home country. The EU Program (section I(III) row) names undergraduates for students and scholars from EU member states; applications go to the Office for Education and Culture, Mission of the PRC to the EU. The PIF Program (section I(III) row) names undergraduates for students and scholars from Pacific Island countries; applications go to the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat. The WMO Program (section I(III) row) names undergraduates for aspiring students and scholars in meteorological research; applications go to WMO.

The Great Wall Program row (section I(III)) names postgraduates, general scholars and senior scholars and does not name undergraduates. The AUN Program row (section I(III)) names postgraduates only and does not name undergraduates. The University Program (section I(II)) says supporting categories are subject to each university's requirements and does not name undergraduates. The Student Exchange Program (section I(IV)) names general and senior scholars only and does not name undergraduates.

CGS bachelor's conditions and stipend

For a CGS undergraduate program, section IV requires:

  • a high school diploma or its equivalent and age under 25 (section IV item 2);
  • a China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) valid score report, uploaded when applying (section IV item 7; CSCA website: www.csca.cn).

Section IV item 7 applies to bachelor programs. Sections IV items 8–10 set HSK levels for scholar and postgraduate programs, not for bachelor programs.

The stipend for undergraduates is CNY 2,500 per month (section III).

International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship 2025

This scholarship is a separate document from the CGS guide. Its Bachelor's Degree category (item 3) is the Scholarship for Bachelor's Degree in International Chinese Language Education.

Conditions from the 2025 guidelines:

  • The program commences in September 2025 and runs for a maximum of four academic years (item 3).
  • Applicants hold a senior high school diploma and a minimum HSK Test (Level 4) score of 210 and HSKK (Intermediate Level) score of 60 (item 3).
  • Applicants are non-Chinese citizens, aged between 16 and 35 on September 1, 2025; the maximum age for in-service Chinese teachers may be extended to 45, but those who apply for a Bachelor's degree shall be younger than 25 under most circumstances (section I item 5).
