X2 visa for China: who it is for and what to send
Unofficial summary · Sources checked
The X2 is the visa for short-term study in mainland China: study of no more than 180 days. The document to submit is the admission notice or admission letter from the school admitting you, and the embassy or consulate where you apply may ask for more. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs instructions put the 30-day residence permit note under the X1 entry and give none under the X2 entry; what governs your stay is the duration of stay printed in the visa.
You can run the same check in the X1 or X2 visa check: enter your study length and where you will live, and it prints the documents for that visa plus the steps that follow after entry.
Who the X2 is for
Regulations of the People's Republic of China on Administration of the Entry and Exit of Foreigners, Article 6(11) (State Council Decree No. 637; English text published by the National Immigration Administration): the X1 visa is issued to persons who apply for long-term study in China, and the X2 visa is for persons who apply for short-term study in China.
The 180-day figure is stated in two places, and they speak of two different things:
| The line | What it says | Where it is written |
|---|---|---|
| Category line | X2: study of no more than 180 days; X1: study for a period exceeding 180 days | Embassy of the PRC in the United Kingdom, "Part One: Visa for China (Mainland only)", visa category table |
| Definition line | Short-term study: study at a school in China of no more than 180 days (inclusive); long-term study: more than 180 days | Ministry of Education Order No. 42, Article 45 (Chinese text; the English here is this site's translation) |
| Stay line | Where the duration of stay specified in a visa does not exceed 180 days, the holder may stay within that duration | Exit and Entry Administration Law, Article 29 |
The UK embassy page carries a time stamp of 2020-07-01 and is that embassy's own guide; other Chinese embassies and consulates publish their own pages. The Ministry of Education text uses "no more than 180 days (inclusive)" and the UK embassy uses "no more than 180 days": this page gives both wordings as they stand and refers you to the office handling your application.
Two further points on the 180 days. The category line is about the study you intend to do, while the stay line is about what the visa itself prints; the duration of stay in the visa is what you must stay within. Neither Article 45 of Order No. 42 nor the UK embassy category table says how the days of a study period are counted, so this site's tool counts whole days with both the first and the last day included for the length of study only — that is the tool's own counting and it does not count any official deadline or period.
What you send
Regulations Article 7(11): to apply for the X2 visa, the applicant shall, in accordance with relevant provisions, submit such certification documents as the admission notice issued by the admission institution. The same item for the X1 visa adds certification documents provided by the competent authority; the X2 item does not name those.
Two official pages spell the X2 document out:
- Ministry of Foreign Affairs, "Visa Application Instructions of the People's Republic of China" (申请办理中华人民共和国签证须知, China Consular Services site): X2 visa — the admission letter issued by a school or other admitting entity in China. The page states that requirements are as required by the Chinese Embassy or Consulate-General in your locality.
- Embassy of the PRC in the United Kingdom, "Part Two: How to Apply for a Visa for China (Mainland only)": X2 visa — original or photocopy of the admission notice issued by a college, university or other educational institution in China. Page time stamp 2020-07-01.
The two pages use different words for the same document, "admission letter" and "admission notice", and one UK page allows a photocopy. Take both wordings to the mission where you apply: that mission's own page governs an individual application. Under the X2 entry the Ministry of Foreign Affairs instructions and the UK "Part Two" page list only the admission letter or notice. Article 35 of Order No. 42, which covers applications for the X1 and X2 visa, also mentions the proof filed for record with the education authority and other relevant materials alongside the school's admission notice. Article 7(11) of the Regulations and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs instructions give no fee figure and no processing time. The UK "Part Two" page gives the processing time (regular service: ready for collection on the fourth working day; express service: the third working day) and points readers to the latest notice on visa fees on the embassy website.

Staying within the duration of stay
Exit and Entry Administration Law, Article 29: where the duration of stay specified in a visa does not exceed 180 days, the holder may stay in China within the duration specified in it. Article 29 of the Law sets out no residence permit application step for that case; the X2 line printed by this site's tool covers staying within the duration of stay and how an extension works, and prints no residence permit step.
Read the visa itself when you get it. The study length you planned decides the category; the duration printed in the visa decides how long you may remain.
If you need longer: extending the stay
The extension rules come from two documents. Exit and Entry Administration Law, Article 29 and Regulations Article 14 (State Council Decree No. 637) both state them, and both place the same ceiling on the extension.
How the application runs, from Article 29 of the Law:
- Apply to the exit and entry administration of the public security organ under the local people's government at or above the county level.
- Apply in the place where you are staying.
- File the application seven days before the duration specified in the visa expires.
- Submit the information of the specific application matters, as the relevant requirements ask.
- If the reasons are examined and found appropriate and sufficient, the extension is granted.
- If the extension is denied, leave China when the duration expires.
Three limits follow. The accumulated length of extension shall not exceed the original duration of stay specified in the visa (Law, Article 29), and the total period of extension shall not exceed the original duration of stay specified in the visa (Regulations, Article 14). Article 14 adds that the decision to extend is valid only for the current entry and does not affect the number of entries or the validity period of entry specified in the visa. Article 14 also states that when the duration is extended, the foreigner shall adhere to the purpose specified in the original visa and stay within the extended duration of stay.
An extension is not a new visa. It runs against the original duration of stay and stays inside the original visa's purpose.
Questions people ask
Can I study for exactly 180 days on an X2?
Both texts put 180 days on the X2 side of the line: Ministry of Education Order No. 42, Article 45 defines short-term study as no more than 180 days inclusive, and the UK embassy category table gives X2 for a period of no more than 180 days. Both wordings are given above as they stand; the office handling your application decides your case.
Can I extend an X2 stay?
Yes, on the terms in Article 29 of the Law: apply to the exit and entry administration of the public security organ at or above county level in the place of your stay, seven days before the duration expires, and submit the information of the specific application matters as required. The extension is granted if the reasons are found appropriate and sufficient and refused if they are not.
How much longer can an extension give me?
The accumulated extension shall not exceed the original duration of stay specified in the visa (Law, Article 29), and the total period of extension shall not exceed that original duration either (Regulations, Article 14). Neither Article 29 of the Law nor Article 14 of the Regulations gives a separate figure in days for the extension.
Do I need a residence permit on an X2?
Article 29 of the Law sets out no residence permit step for a holder staying within the duration of stay on a visa, while Article 30 of the Law requires a residence permit application within 30 days from the date of entry where a visa specifies that the holder needs to apply for one after entry. Article 29 states that where the duration of stay specified in a visa does not exceed 180 days, the holder may stay within the duration specified. For your own case, follow the office handling your application.
Do I send the admission notice or the admission letter?
Both names appear in official texts: the Regulations Article 7(11) and the UK embassy page say admission notice, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs instructions say admission letter issued by a school or other admitting entity. Send the document your mission's page names.
